The Magic of Vitamin C

The Magic of Vitamin C

You'd probably expect a picture of an orange but no, there are so many sources of vitamin C and not all do the same thing. See why this is one thing you NEED in your skin routine.

Vitamin C is praised for its numerous benefits for skin health, making it a popular ingredient in skincare products. As I often tell my clients, vitamin C is like chocolate- there are many types and many levels of quality. When you get one that isn't right for your skin or is formulated cheaply (or using synthetic vitamins), it will almost always cause irritation such as redness and stinging. Finding the right vitamin C is possible but, first let's see why it's amazing for skin:

Antioxidant Properties: Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, which means it helps neutralize free radicals in the skin. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage skin cells and speed up our aging. By scavenging these free radicals, vitamin C protects our skin from oxidative stress and environmental damage, including UV radiation from the sun.

Collagen Synthesis: Vitamin C is crucial for collagen production - collagen is a protein that gives skin its strength and elasticity. Collagen production declines with age, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin but, promoting collagen synthesis helps maintain skin firmness and reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Brightening: Vitamin C is known for its ability to brighten the skin and even skin tone. It inhibits melanin production, the pigment responsible for dark spots and hyperpigmentation, resulting in a more radiant complexion and a reduction in the appearance of dark spots, age spots, and sun damage.

Wound Healing: Vitamin C promotes tissue repair and regeneration, making it beneficial for healing scars, acne scars, and other skin injuries.

Sun Protection: While not a replacement for sunscreen, vitamin C can provide some degree of protection against UV damage. It also enhances the effectiveness of sunscreen by boosting its ability to neutralize free radicals generated by UV exposure.

Anti-inflammatory Properties: Vitamin C soothes irritated skin and reduces redness and inflammation associated with conditions like acne, rosacea, and eczema.

Hydration: Vitamin C helps maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier, preventing trans-epidermal water loss and keeping the skin hydrated and soft.

Overall, incorporating vitamin C into your skincare routine can help improve the overall health and appearance of your skin, promoting a youthful, radiant complexion and protecting against environmental damage.
