What is PDRN and what does it do?
PDRN was first identified as beneficial in the 1980s with the sole intention of healing wounds that weren't responding to standard care — chronic ulcers, burn sites, radiation lesions. Medical researchers in Italy isolated DNA fragments from biological sources to see if they could accelerate tissue repair.
PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotides) is derived from salmon — specifically Chum Salmon and Salmon Trout. Salmon DNA is structurally very similar to human DNA, which means the body recognizes it as compatible rather than foreign. That's why PDRN has such a clean safety profile across decades of medical use.
What does it do in skincare?
After PDRN was identified, South Korean researchers took the ball and ran. Korean dermatologists looked at what PDRN was doing for wound healing — accelerated tissue repair, collagen stimulation, reduced inflammation, improved vascularization — and asked: if it can regenerate damaged skin, what happens when you use it on aging skin?
ANSWER? A TON!
PDRN doesn't work the way most skincare ingredients do. It isn't just "hydrating" or an "antioxidant" or "anti-inflammatory." PDRN works with and communicates directly to our skin's cellular repair functions.
NERD TALK TIME.
Here is the breakdown of what PDRN does in our skin.
PDRN works by activating a receptor in the skin called A2A, which is part of the body’s natural healing system. Normally, this receptor turns on when tissue is damaged, triggering collagen production, new blood vessel growth, skin repair, and reduced inflammation.
PDRN activates this same repair response without an actual wound. MAGIC! As a result, it helps stimulate collagen, support skin regeneration, improve healing, and calm inflammation.
***BONUS: Studies have also shown it can increase fibroblast activity — the cells responsible for producing collagen — by up to 30%, helping aging or damaged skin repair itself more effectively.
PDRN also works by supplying DNA building blocks that skin cells use to repair and regenerate themselves. This helps fuel the healing process while also activating it.
Together, these effects boost collagen production, improve blood flow and hydration, reduce inflammation, strengthen the skin barrier, and speed up recovery and repair.
Who is PDRN best suited for?
1. those with aging, fatigued, compromised skin (think sensitive and cranky, skin that looks dull and lifeless)
2. peri, menopausal and post menopausal women - As estrogen declines and skin cell repair slows, skin that used to bounce back no longer does. PDRN addresses the underlying mechanism — it gives the skin's own repair systems a nudge back toward function.
3. those seeking anti-aging skincare benefits - PDRN works with the skin rather than stripping or forcing it. For those who've had bad experiences with acids, retinoids, PDRN is a different (yet effective) option.
